CHIT-CHAT
FROM WAKKERSTROOM
1 JUNE 2018
Dear Wakkerstroom people,
It’s been a very exciting few weeks for everyone with the event of “Dorp of the Year” ! Good Luck to Wakkerstroom – let’s hope we come out on top.
1) DORP OF THE YEAR – Hopefully thats us !! Sunday evenings’ Vote-a-thon was a huge success. To the background of Eric’s music selection everybody had a lot of fun racing to do their 30 votes for a WAKKERSTROOM !
Seeing the 9 other towns on Kwela was a bit daunting but only highlighted how important it was to make as much effort as possible to help everyone vote. The Hotel, with the contributions from Mucky Duck and Jeff’s bread created a wonderful meal, and we had the Gibbons, Warner’s, Clarke’s and Toomey’s from JHB, the press from Newcastle & Volksrust and the Murphy’s just for the event. The money raised from the event led to the Tuesday’s Coffee morning where about 35 Seniors got together over cake & coffee and sent out their votes. ?
Lizet and Linda made contact with the headmistress and teachers at the local High School and the students were given the opportunity to vote for Wakkerstroom.
Their enthusiasm and enjoyment in being able to participate in this event was quite overwhelming.
Mark Kotze went through to the Christian School in Volksrust and there too, the idea of being part of the process of voting for Wakkerstroom, was met with much willingness and positivity
People have risen to the occasion and the support that has been shown for this campaign, has been spectacular. From all over South Africa messages of encouragement and promises of voting support have come in. The WTA committee would like to say the hugest Thank You to every single person who has contributed to this campaign. Whether it be with donations, FB support or making sure that all your family, friends and helpers were voting. This is a big part of what makes Wakkerstroom so very special and our Dorp van die Jaar!!!
2) IRISES – Runnymede Iris Farm has just sold the last of the Bearded Irises to happy gardeners until Spring arrives. Sue sends her heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all her customers past, present and future. She says to thank you all for another wonderful year and the best wishes to you and your garden until September.
3) THE BISTRO – The Bistro will be closed from Monday 11 June and will re-open on Wednesday 27 June. Many thanks.
4) DANA BREAKFAST – I did mention the Dana breakfast in the last Chit Chat. Unfortunately that has been postponed as so much was happening on the weekend of 16 June. The BIG BOERE breakfast will now be held on Saturday 30 June in the Diens Sentrum at Dana. It is actually a brunch/breakfast and will start at 10.30 – Sounds like a yummy way to start a morning.

8) ART & CRAFT RAMBLE (5th Annual)
This year’s Art & Craft Ramble opens on Friday 15th June with a Mystery Craft Breakfast and a number of courses (Bread making, Pottery and Lace Knitting). The Official Opening, with long fire pit and pop-up restaurant food and drink stalls takes place outside the Ijuba Gallery in Kerk St @ 5pm for 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun – but dress warmly!! You will be able to meet and be inspired by the work of Jan Tshikuthula, currently exhibiting at the prestigious Teresa Lisamore Gallery, who is our Guest artist this year. He will also run a demo and lecture on Basic Printmaking on Saturday and perform a Gallery Walkabout on Sunday morning.
The Art & Craft Exhibitions will be mainly in the Town Hall from 9am Saturday until 2pm Sunday, please collect or download a map to your phone and make sure you view the Art & Craft in shops and see the new work of artists who will welcome you to their home studios. We already have exhibitors from Port Elizabeth, Paul Pietersburg, Newcastle and Dundee joining our local Art & Crafters this time. Please give them your support. At 3pm our Lotto Funded Children’s Marimba band will perform on stage in the town hall, followed by a short Prize giving for the Art & Craft Ramble and the Bird Club Photographic competitions at 4.30pm. On Sunday morning Carol Preston’s ‘Litter Lions’ will arrive, dressed in costumes made with recycled material in the theme of ‘In Flight’ and sing their songs about litter and recycling. There will be locals with food and drink stalls outside the Town Hall on Saturday. We are offering space for young or old Wakkerstroomers who have never exhibited before, to exhibit 3 items at no cost. Please contact the organizers if you know someone who will fit into this category.
The Art Ramble has a competition running for Art or Craft work done in any medium, 2D or 3D for primary, high school and adults. Please hand in clearly marked entries to Wakkerstroom Central or DeKotzenhof before Friday 15th June. These will be on display on Saturday where the public will vote for the winners. If there is anyone who would like to donate a prize for the children in either High school or Primary school whether to be named or anonymous – your assistance would be greatly appreciated by the committee.
If you would you like to learn a new skill or add to some existing knowledge, we have arranged a number of fantastic courses and demonstrations for you. These include a brewery tour and tasting, a bird photography outing, a mosaic craft course, oil paint techniques, drawing in still life, woodworking, pottery, cheese making, bread making, cartooning and a 2 day multi-media course.
